SEIU Florida Internship Summer and Fall 2016

We are currently seeking students committed to social and economic justice who have a strong interest in politics and campaigns for the Summer and Fall semesters. Participants will learn about issue-based and electoral organizing in addition to developing specialized skills in various categories. Interns will work under close supervision of SEIU Florida staff in one or more of the following departments:

Organizing

  • Recruit new community members through phone and in-person outreach
  • Participate in planning and execution of key campaign events
  • Attending planning meetings with coalition partners

Data

  • Enter and bulk upload data to VAN/NGPVAN
  • Assist organizers with basic VAN questions
  • Create and update data reports
  • Maintain data in VAN/NGPVAN

Political/Policy

  • Help track political races across the state, maintain database and candidate files while gaining exposure to all aspects of supporting successful campaigns
  • Track the legislative process, help research and draft policy and assist with organizing conference calls to campaigns
  • Attending planning meetings with coalition partners

Communications

  • Assist with management of social media accounts
  • Create flyers and other print materials
  • Help write and develop talking points for various campaigns
  • Write and send email blasts for SEIU Florida and other community events using NGPVAN
  • Create and update signup forms in NGPVAN and Jotform

An intern will receive: concrete skills they can use on a resume and in future work and a solid understanding of the work environment in a real world non-profit/union/political organization. Strong references will also be available based on performance during the program.

Though the internship is unpaid, SEIU will work with student’s department to obtain relevant academic credit. Those who can successfully demonstrate the following will be given preference:

  • Solid interpersonal skills and willingness to be a team player
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Access to reliable transportation
  • Familiarity with technology, including Microsoft Office, Google Apps Suite, JotForm and/or VAN
